I have one daughter, Lianne, who was born in China. Throughout her childhood we’ve been involved with other families who have adopted from China through play groups and events, as well as a number of years volunteering as a parent for the Mei Hua School. I am happy to support the NWCCA and Chinese community by serving on the board and appreciate the opportunity to represent the membership.
- Jenny Ji (章樵)– Current board member
I was born and raised in China. I arrived in Los Angeles of California in 1990. During this new period of my life, I enjoyed and experienced an extremely busy life with work, school, church, and family. After many years of hard work in supporting my daughter, she became an established figure skater who received several awards including, the U.S. Figure Skating Association Double Gold Medalist Award, a National Honor Roll in academics, and was invited to and attended the Presidential Inauguration with the Global Young Leaders Conference.
Three years ago, I moved to Bellingham and helped my husband with our restaurant business. My daughter now studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. My new desire is to start living for myself and continue to pursue my education here at Western. I hope to find my passion in a new career in the field of Art Therapy.
Having lived in numerous cities and studied at different colleges and worked at several banks and insurance companies, my roles and experiences as a wife, a mother, a worker, a self employer and a student have truly impacted my life and have shaped my beliefs and desires to help and support others while empowering myself. One of my passions is creating art. I love photography and painting and feel that creating art pieces have helped me to overcome many stresses and understand my feelings and emotions, especially ones that had been repressed in my past during the Cultural Revolution. Aside from art, one of my favorite things to do is to offer my time for community service such as serving as a piano accomplice and a music coach for the Seattle Joy Singing Club. I also enjoy serving as a treasurer for the Board of the Northwest Chinese Cultural Association and am also in the committee of Bellingham Chinese Culture Festival as well as a board member of the Tri-cities Figure Skating Association of Kennewick, WA. Although I take on many challenges and activities, I believe that I am successful because I understand what commitment is. I love to challenge myself and set high standards for myself.
After I finished studying at the Whatcom Community College, I am determined to pursue my dream of furthering my education. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself” (John Dewey). The most beautiful dream to me as of right now is to attain higher education and to apply my academic achievement to contribute to the American society through art therapy. I am grateful for my life after I have moved to the U.S. and hope to keep gaining more life experiences here in Bellingham.

Education: Public Administration, Master degree, University Antwerp, Belgium
Information Management System, Master degree, University Antwerp, Belgium
Sustainable development, Bachelor degree, China Agriculture University, Beijing, China
In spite of the large numbers of Chinese in the U.S., most Americans have a very limited knowledge of Chinese language and culture. While China is having more and more impact on the rest of the world, let western people know about china is more important than ever. Meanwhile, let our own next generations to understand china is taking into account to our live too. So this is the purpose I like to know and involve more about our Chinese community in Bellingham.
- Johnny Hu (胡錫聖) – 27, Math Faculty, Whatcom Community College
As a Chinese-American young professional, I am proud of my Chinese background and language. My passion outside of teaching and mathematics mostly consists of helping others - particularly young Asian American people - understand the importance of how their Asian culture helps shape their unique identity. I am proud to be a member of NWCCA and I see serving on the board as an opportunity to reach out to more individuals (especially youth and young professionals) in the Bellingham community. In the past I've had experience working as a faculty advisor to several Chinese student clubs. In addition, I've been an active member of the Taiwan ROC Youth Alliance of Pacific Northwest (TYAPN). As a graduate student at WWU, I reached out to many Chinese students and served as their unofficial mentor. At Whatcom Community College, I will be working with International Programs to help increase international student enrollment. I'm a strong supporter of international students and other students of color on campus.
- Kay Morris – Elementary School Teacher
I am from Lynden and have been an elementary school teacher for over 20 years. Currently I am teaching first grade at Ebenezer Christian School. I also taught English in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China from 1992-1994. I have one daughter, Julia, who was born in China. I adopted her in 1997 and she is now 15 years old.
I enjoyed living and working in China and I enjoyed learning about the festivals and celebrating them while I was there. I think it is important for my daughter to continue to honor and celebrate the culture and country of her birth.
